Windows Software Development Kit Installation Failed
I was trying to install the Debugging Tools for Windows from the Windows SDK for Windows 7 in order to analyze a memory dump from a user’s laptop that was experiencing BSODs when I ran into this error. If your installation fails click the View Log button and down near the bottom of the log take a look for a line that states “C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.1\Setup\SFX\vcredist_x64.exe installation failed with return code 5100“. This most likely is caused by a known issue with the Software Development Kit installation that causes it to fail when there is a newer version of the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable installed on your computer than the version that is bundled with the Windows Software Development Kit. The workaround is to go into Programs and Features in your Windows control panel and uninstall any Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable entries that you see then run the development kit installation again. If you want to have the most up-to-date C++ 2010 redistributable you can download the most recent version and install it over the version that came with the software development kit.
