“Windows Update cannot check for updates, because the service is not running.”
You get the message “Windows Update cannot check for updates, because the service is not running.” even though the service is indeed running. Restarting the service doesn’t fix anything. I found this fix online; it worked for me, and seems to have worked for other people as well. This worked in Windows 7. Open up Windows Update and click on Change Settings on the left side of the Windows Update window. Change Windows Update to never check for updates, and hit ok. Then go back into Change Settings, and set it back to install updates automatically. Windows Update should automagically start working.
